Heating is the season Tucson homeowners forget about, and that’s exactly why it fails. A furnace that sat idle from March to November has had ten months to collect dust and let an igniter weaken. The first genuinely cold night of the year is our busiest heating night of the year — every year.
Heat Pump vs. Furnace Service
Most newer Tucson homes run a heat pump — the same outdoor unit that cools in summer, running in reverse. Older homes often have a gas or electric furnace. They fail in completely different ways, and they need different service:
| Heat pump | Furnace | |
|---|---|---|
| Common faults | Reversing valve, defrost control, low charge, outdoor fan | Igniter, flame sensor, blower motor, limit switch |
| Tell-tale symptom | Runs constantly, never gets warm | Clicks and won’t light, or short-cycles |
| Best service time | Fall, with the cooling tune-up | Fall, before first use |

Common Winter No-Heat Causes
- Failed igniter or flame sensor — the classic first-cold-night furnace failure
- Thermostat set or wired wrong after a battery change or a smart-thermostat swap
- Heat pump stuck in cooling mode — a reversing valve or control board fault
- Defrost cycle not clearing, so the outdoor coil ices over
- Clogged filter choking airflow and tripping the limit switch
- Tripped breaker or a blown fuse in the disconnect
If you smell gas, leave and call your gas utility first
Don’t operate switches, and don’t wait for us to arrive to make that call. Once the utility has cleared it, we’ll handle the equipment.
Fall Heating Check
A short seasonal inspection: test the igniter and flame sensor or the heat-pump reversing valve, verify safe combustion and venting on gas equipment, check airflow and the filter, confirm the thermostat calls correctly, and run the system through a full heating cycle. Best booked alongside the spring cooling tune-up as an annual pair.

Heating & Heat Pump FAQ
Why isn’t my heat pump warming the house?
Common causes are a stuck reversing valve, a failed defrost control, low refrigerant charge, or a thermostat wired or configured wrong. Heat pumps also blow air that feels cool to the hand even when they’re working correctly — so the first thing we check is whether it’s actually a fault.
Do I really need a furnace tune-up in Tucson?
Yes, and specifically because it runs so rarely. A system that sits idle for ten months collects dust, and the first cold night is when you find out the igniter failed. A fall check is short and it’s the difference between a scheduled visit and a 2am one.
My heat pump is making a noise — is that bad?
Some sounds are normal (a whoosh when it switches into defrost). Grinding, screeching, or rattling are not. Shut it off and call — running a system through a mechanical fault is how a repair becomes a replacement.
Do you install heating systems too?
Yes. We repair, tune up, and replace furnaces and heat pumps, and we’ll tell you honestly when a repair is the better buy.
